About the Association of International Relations Studies

The Association of International Relations Studies was established in 1964, with the aim of supporting the development of research in the field of IR; and of promoting mutual cooperation amongst its members. The association’s office is located at the Department of International Relations of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the University of Tokyo. In addition to publishing a peer-reviewed journal, “Studies on International Relations”, the association also organizes study sessions on a regular basis. These activities are conducted with the objective of facilitating academic exchanges amongst its members.

Although many of the association’s members are faculty members and regular students of the IR course at the Department of Advanced Social and International Studies, the door of the association is always widely open to other researchers who have a keen interest in the academic field of IR. Therefore, its 200 odd members are rather diverse in their affiliation and academic backgrounds. Please feel free to attend any of the association’s study sessions, should its activities be of interest to you.

How to Become a Member

The association requires all potential members to exhibit a keen interest in IR, as well as to be in agreement with its basic principles. In addition, the recommendation of two existing members and the acknowledgement of the association’s committee are required. The annual membership fee is 3,000 yen for members of the public, and 2,000 yen for current students.

A copy of the application form is available here. Please send a hard copy of your application to the association’s office, after having filled-in the required details.
